Course Syllabus

Module 1: Introduction to Occupational Health and Safety Management

This module is designed to introduce students to fundamental principles on occupational health and safety. It includes rationale behind Occupational Health and Safety, current efforts in management of OHS in Africa.

Module 2: Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems

The course equips students how to develop a robust system on managing occupational health and safety based on ISO 45001:2018. Through this course participants understand how to develop systems from scratch and understand how to manage effective systems if they join an organization with an existing system.

Module 3: Occupational Heath Safety Law

This course ensures deeper understanding of concepts in OHS law, existing OHS legal framework, coverage and areas of improvement. The course also covers compliance models which can be used by a practioner to improve OHS compliance at workplaces.

Module 4: Operational Risk Management

Operational risk management will explore how to manage risk from Occupational health and safety based on ISO 31000:2018 framework. It will explore integration of various standards which include business continuity and other operational risk which can emanate from Occupational Health and Safety perspective.

Module 5: Auditing

This course will impact participants with the knowledge on how to plan, execute and prepare audit reports. Auditing is crucial in ensuring that systems are effective, on course and aligned to business objectives. This course is based on ISO 19011:2018.

Module 6: Industrial Hygiene and Toxicology

This module covers issues of how exposure to certain hazards in workplaces affect employees within workplaces. It ensures students understand how to carry out hygiene surveys which include noise monitoring, occupational dust and ergonomics. Principles in chemical management and monitoring of chemical exposures is also covered.

Module 7: Environmental Social Governance

ESG is one of the trending issues worldwide. This course will enable participants to understand how to establish ESG reporting framework. Establish principles of environmental accounting, ESG reporting based on the GRI standards.

Module 8: Project

Participants are required to develop a project of interest to tackle a specific problem at workplaces.
